UYMC Core Initiatives

Our Core Initiatives provide a consistent, clear understanding of what our staff, cadets and community members are expected to learn. If we are going to have a better society moving forward, it is imperative to act on positive initiatives. Brooklyn Youth Marines, Inc. implements the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in at home, in school, and when they need to make critical decisions by themselves.

Positive Character & Leadership Development:

Creating a POSITIVE CHARACTER starts when an individual takes full responsibility for their words, actions, successes and failures, or lack thereof. It is created very slowly and can be damaged very swiftly. It is not what you do or say when people are around, but how you think and act when there is no audience.

Financial & Emotional Literacy:

FINANCIAL LITERACY is the ability to understand how money works in the world: how someone manages to earn or make it, how that person manages it, how he/she invests it (turn it into more) and how that person donates it to help others. More specifically, it refers to the set of skills and knowledge that allows an individual to make informed and effective decisions with all of their financial resources.

EMOTIONAL LITERACY is the ability to recognize, understand and appropriately express our emotions. Just as verbal literacy is the basic building-block for reading and writing, emotional literacy is the basis for perceiving and communicating emotions. Becoming emotionally literate is learning the alphabet, grammar and vocabulary of our emotional lives.

Time Management & Physical Wellness:

TIME MANAGEMENT is important for your personal life and career success. Most people feel like they have too much to do and not enough time. They blame lack of time for their poor finances, stress, bad relationships and not exercising their body. UYMC promotes wise time management that enables our Cadets what’s necessary. Life today presents so many distractions, and therefore, it is extremely important to embed good management skills.

PHYSICAL WELLNESS is the physical dimension of wellness entails taking good care of your physical body. Our bodies function for us in countless ways every day, allowing us to work, rest, eat, and play. Sometimes we expect our bodies to perform these tasks without providing the nourishment and support it needs. UYMC promotes physical wellness to reduce the risk of illness fatigue and injury. In addition, physical wellness can lead to psychological benefits such as enhanced self-esteem, self-control, determination and a sense of direction.
